Start your outdoor adventure with a difference and by climbing onboard a steam train to escape to the countyside.  From Ramsbottom you can climb Holcombe Hill for stunning views or, for a real sense of freedom, head off across the West Pennine Moors.  On the way back don’t forget to call in at The Shoulder of Mutton in Holcombe village,  just one of the great pubs on the East Lancashire Railway's 'Rail Ale Trail' .

Just outside Bury town centre you'll find Burrs Country Park this is a great place for a riverside walk, to watch some wildlife or feed the ducks and there are even works of art.  Book in advance with Burrs Activity Centre and try your hand at canoeing.

When it comes to lunch the area is packed with places to eat and drink so you can leave the sandwiches at home.  In Ramsbottom you'll find The Chocolate Café and The Cultured Bean, both award winners and family friendly, while Falshaws Farm Shop and Ice Cream Parlour near Summerseat is a real hit with kids and grown ups.  Look out for their very friendly chickens.
