Start your outdoor adventure with a difference and by climbing onboard a steam train to escape to the countyside. From Ramsbottom you can climb Holcombe Hill for stunning views or, for a real sense of freedom, head off across the West Pennine Moors. On the way back don’t forget to call in at The Shoulder of Mutton in Holcombe village, just one of the great pubs on the East Lancashire Railway's 'Rail Ale Trail' .
Just outside Bury town centre you'll find Burrs Country Park this is a great place for a riverside walk, to watch some wildlife or feed the ducks and there are even works of art. Book in advance with Burrs Activity Centre and try your hand at canoeing.
When it comes to lunch the area is packed with places to eat and drink so you can leave the sandwiches at home. In Ramsbottom you'll find The Chocolate Café and The Cultured Bean, both award winners and family friendly, while Falshaws Farm Shop and Ice Cream Parlour near Summerseat is a real hit with kids and grown ups. Look out for their very friendly chickens.

Running from Bury along the picturesque Irwell Valley, this heritage railway is a great way for all the family to get out into the countryside. There are also some great events. Look out for Days Out with Thomas on the 6/7 August.
Burrs Country Park
An ideal spot to explore riverside paths, woodland and open spaces. Look for wildlife, have a picnic or feed the ducks. Try a canoeing taster sessions at Burrs Activity Centre (pre-booking required) just one of the outdoor activities on offer for groups and individuals
Peel Tower and Holcombe Hill
Peel Tower is one of the area’s most noticeable landmarks standing 128ft high on top of Holcombe Hill. Climb the hill from nearby Holcombe village for stunning views across Manchester. The tower also opens to the public.
Falshaws Farm Shop
Located just outside Ramsbottom this café and farm shop makes its own range of ice creams using milk from their own cows. There are great views from the patio, outdoor space and some friendly chickens.
The Chocolate Cafe
Just one of the great places to dine in Ramsbottom and fast becoming a local institution. A chocolate shop and café serving simple British food alongside chocolate specialities including a Chocolate Tasting Plate and DIY truffles.
