For peaceful escape, there are our beautiful country parks. Smithills Hall near Bolton, is set in 2,000 acres of stunning woodland, farmland and moorland with self guided tours offering unparalleled views.

In the heart of Wigan, Haigh Hall and Country Park has 40 miles of secluded woodland trails and canal towpaths. To keep the relaxing pace, take in a round of golf at the Haigh Golfing Centre or visit the Stables Art and Craft Gallery.

Dovestones

If you prefer to take a walk on the wild side in the great outdoors, the South and West Pennine Moors run through the region, offering miles of cycle and bridleways for you to blow away the cobwebs.

Alternatively, there is the wonderful Peak District National Park that takes in Oldham; with Dovestones Reservoir and the picturesque Pennine villages of Saddleworth being two must-see highlights.

Stream in Healey Dell Nature Reserve
Healey Dell Nature Reserve

Between the towns and villages of Rochdale are vast expanses of open space and breath taking countryside. Healey Dell nature reserve makes for a tranquil retreat. The river Spodden has carved unusual rock formations and spectacular waterfalls throughout.

This is a region dissected by canals, a lasting reminder of our industrial heritage. Today they are beautiful and tranquil traffic free cycling routes, heritage trails, picnic areas, places of historical significance and havens for wildlife. The Leeds to Liverpool Canal, which runs through Wigan, is a prime example of this, and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, flowing through the villages of Oldham, has the added bonus of a canal-side sculpture trail.
