South Pennines Walk & Ride Festival

29th July 2010

September 11th – September 26th 2010.

The fourth South Pennines Walk and Ride Festival promises to be another great event in the UK’s outdoor events calendar, establishing the South Pennines as an area that can match many better known areas when it comes to stunning scenery and outdoor activity. Moreover our excellent public transport means that everyone can enjoy the countryside and leave their car at home.

Twelve events taking place in and around Rochdale’s fabulous countryside will be included in the Festival. And the full Festival Programme for 2010 hopes to provide something for everyone – short, medium and long walks, various cycle rides and horse rides and for the first time there will be backpacking walks that span two days and include a night out under canvas! This year is special because the Festival is celebrating the Watershed Landscape Project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and managed by Pennine Prospects which focuses on the story of the South Pennines uplands. We are also taking the opportunity to celebrate The Ramblers 75th Anniversary year and the Year of Biodiversity through special events marked in the Programme.

There are interpretive walks to places of geological and archaeological interest, various talks, and themed events focusing on special aspects of South Pennines life and landscapes such as built heritage and wildlife recording as well as how to pick and cook mushrooms (cooking session included!)

Most events are free although for some, places are limited and you may need to book – please check the programme before you set off.
