If you prefer to take a walk on the wild side in the great outdoors, the South and West Pennine Moors run through the region, offering miles of cycle and bridleways for you to blow away the cobwebs.

Fairies Chapel:Healey Dell, Rochdale

Between the towns and villages of Rochdale are vast expanses of open space and breath taking countryside. Healey Dell nature reserve makes for a tranquil retreat. The river Spodden has carved unusual rock formations and spectacular waterfalls throughout.

This is a region dissected by canals, a lasting reminder of our industrial heritage. Today they are beautiful and tranquil traffic free cycling routes, heritage trails, picnic areas, places of historical significance and havens for wildlife. The Leeds to Liverpool Canal, which runs through Wigan, is a prime example of this, and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, flowing through the villages of Oldham, has the added bonus of a canal cruises and a towpath sculpture trail.
